CTRA Spring 2019 Newsletter

By now, most College Terrace residents should have received a copy of the CTRA’s Spring newsletter “Views from the Terrace” on their doorstep. (Thanks to Erika Enos and her band of volunteers for delivering the newsletters!) If you didn’t receive one, or prefer to read it online, you can download the newsletter here.

The newsletter includes a piece on “Life in College Terrace” by CTRA Social Coordinator Taylor Brady, as well as reports from Stanford Observer Pria Graves and City Observer Margaret Heath (writing about Khoury’s Market). California Avenue Observer Ann Balin contributed a piece about the coyotes that visited College Terrace last year. Thanks to CTRA Communications Director Jens Jensen for putting the newsletter together and to Susan Wilson for doing the layout.

At the end of the newsletter are short biographies of the nominees for the 2019-20 CTRA Board of Directors. The election will be held at our annual meeting this Saturday, March 23rd, at 10am at University Lutheran Church. If you can’t attend, but still want to vote in the election, you can download an absentee ballot (see the ballot for submission instructions).

We’re still looking for volunteers for a handful of positions including Secretary, Research Park Observer, and Social Coordinator. If you’re interested in serving on the board, please email current CTRA president James Cook, or just come to the meeting and volunteer. It’s a fantastic way to serve your neighborhood and community!

Stanford GUP Town Hall Thursday

Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian is hosting a Town Hall this Thursday, March 14 about Stanford University’s General Use Permit application. The meeting is from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in Palo Alto City Council Chambers (250 Hamilton Avenue). 

The event is co-hosted by the Palo Alto Weekly and will provide an update on where things stand in the review process, including a high-level overview of the staff-proposed conditions of approval. After brief welcoming and introductory comments, the staff of the Palo Alto Weekly will interview Supervisor Simitian and then turn to the audience for questions they have for the Supervisor. Supervisor Simitian and his staff hope this format will ensure they get to the information of most interest to the public.

If you can’t attend the meeting, it will be taped and available on Supervisor Simitian’s website. It will also be broadcast live by Midpen Media on Channel 26.

Before the meeting, the PTA Council of Palo Alto will be holding a “Stanford Share the Cost” rally in the plaza in front of City Hall. The council is urging Stanford to fully mitigate the impacts of any new development on Palo Alto schools, including providing lands and funds for building a new elementary school. On that note, Stanford and PAUSD announced this week that they’re restarting discussions on the GUP and its impacts.

Volunteers Needed for the CTRA Board

The annual meeting of the College Terrace Residents Association (CTRA) is coming up on Saturday, March 23, at 9:30am at University Lutheran Church (1611 Stanford Ave at Bowdoin). Palo Alto mayor Eric Filseth will give an address and Q&A, residents will elect the 2019-20 CTRA board, and there will be pastries and muffins provided by Khoury’s Market.

We are still looking for volunteers for a few open positions on the CTRA board for 2019-20 – no experience necessary, just an open mind and generous spirit. If you are a College Terrace resident and are interested in serving on the board, please email current CTRA president James Cook, or just come to the meeting and volunteer. It’s a small time commitment and a fantastic opportunity to serve your neighborhood and community.

9:30 a.m. Coffee/pastries/socializing with neighbors old and new
10:00 a.m. Welcome and “State of the Terrace” address by current CTRA President James Cook
10:15 a.m. Election of new CTRA board
10:30 a.m. Mayor Eric Filseth’s address followed by Q & A
11:15 a.m. Announcement of election results and appreciation of new board members
11:30 a.m. Meeting ends

Khoury’s Market Soft Opens in College Terrace
Khoury’s Market, the long-awaited, family-run replacement for the College Terrace Market, is now open! The inventory is still coming together–although there’s already a beautiful display of fresh produce–but stop by, meet the Khourys, and check it out.

California Ave Garage/Public Safety Building Project Walk-Through this Friday
With construction slated to begin next week on the new parking garage and Public Safety Building, City staff will host a walk-through at the 350 Sherman Avenue parking lot on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The walk-through is an opportunity for the public to learn about the projects, the upcoming tree removals, and the City’s broader commitment to Palo Alto’s urban forest.

Weigh in on the City Council’s 2019 Priorities
Each year, the City Council reviews its priorities for the year at its Annual Council Retreat (scheduled for February 2nd). This survey is your chance to let the council know what you think it should focus on in the coming year. If you’re curious, the 2018 priorities were Transportation, Housing, Budget and Finance, and Grade Separation. In 2017, they were Transportation, Housing, Infrastructure, Healthy City/Healthy Community, and Budget and Finance.

Join the CTRA Nominating Committee!
The CTRA’s annual meeting and board election is coming up on March 23rd and we’re looking for people to join the nominating committee to recruit candidates for election. If you’ve been curious about what the CTRA does, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn more. Contact the CTRA president, James Cook, for more information.

California Avenue Repaving This Friday

As construction on University Terrace nears its completion, Stanford is required by the City of Palo Alto to repave California Avenue along the entire frontage of the project (see map below). That work will take place starting at 7am this Friday, December 14, and will make California Avenue beyond Dartmouth Street inaccessible to vehicles until around 5pm.

Residents living on California Avenue in the affected area are encouraged to park their cars Thursday night on one of the adjacent streets so that they can be used while the paving is underway. If you’re in the affected area, please read the complete Construction Advisory for further details.
